Seeking a better life, for one\u2019s self or family, should not subject a human being to&nbsp;torturous conditions lacking basic human rights.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3>Unfair Treatment of People at the Borders&nbsp;<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>There has been an increase in the detention of immigrants and asylum seekers at our borders, including people with disabilities. Source: OIG <\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p><a rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" href=\"https:\/\/www.oig.dhs.gov\/sites\/default\/files\/assets\/2019-06\/OIG-19-47-Jun19.pdf\" target=\"_blank\">According to the Department of Homeland Security Office of the Inspector General\u2019s report<\/a>, inspections of the four detention facilities revealed&nbsp;that&nbsp;Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) facilities detention&nbsp;rules were broken&nbsp;and detainees are held in unhealthy ways:&nbsp; <\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul><li>\u201cSignificant food safety issues\u201d &#8211; spoiled food that puts detainees at risk for illnesses that can be spread in food&nbsp;<\/li><li>Moldy, broken-down bathrooms in detainee housing units&nbsp;&nbsp;<\/li><li>\u201cOverly restrictive segregation\u201d&nbsp;<ul><li> Detainees&nbsp;were&nbsp;separated&nbsp;without&nbsp;providing&nbsp;proper time outside cells (only 3 days per week)&nbsp;<br>One facility allowed only non-contact visits, despite being able to accommodate in-person visitation.&nbsp; <\/li><\/ul><\/li><li> Nooses found in detainee cells&nbsp;<\/li><li>Not enough medical care (or&nbsp;none at all)&nbsp;<\/li><li>Unreported security incidents&nbsp;<\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image\"><img loading=\"lazy\" width=\"658\" height=\"231\" src=\"https:\/\/4nl.bfd.mywebsitetransfer.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/10\/ICE-roof.jpg\" alt=\"Two photos. Photo provided by: Hector Silva<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>According to&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.disabilityrightsca.org\/post\/the-detention-of-immigrant-children-with-disabilities-in-california-a-snapshot\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Disability Rights California (DRC)\u2019s report<\/a>, there are over 14 thousand unaccompanied immigrant children in United States custody. This number is at an all-time high,&nbsp;as of November 2018.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In California, there are nine facilities that contract with the Office of Refugee Resettlement (ORR) to house immigrant children separated from their&nbsp;parent or guardian.
